Help identify sewellia . . . ?

Hello everybody,

Since 4 weeks I have 8 Sewellia Loaches in my Aquarium.


When I bought them, the seller told me that this are
Sewellia breviventralis, but now someone told me, that
this should be Sewellia elongata.

Can anyone help me to identify exactly my Sewellia ?

sewellia elongata is right.
sewellia "breviventralis" = elongata. the second species coming with is still in id by J.Freyhof as soon I send him the material. have a look here

the trade hasn't accepted the right id not even my german importers do. could last for some time.

hey charles, i was just looking through the previous thread, and i have noticed, too, that two different spp. were imported as elongatus for me. did you ever manage to secure information on the second spp.?

I'm preparing some specimen for id. it's a new species as far as J. Freyhof can judge by the pictures and mesures I could furnish. it's complicated by the fact of (mis-?)identification of known and/or unknown species by vietnamese ichthyologists and the id in the revisions of Freyhof/Roberts on the basis of few/young specimen with different patterns and mesures from laos and vietnam. elongata e.g. shows a great variability in one of the main visible dististinctive features (length of the ventral fins).
and of course sp "spotted" is not described yet too. the next revision/genetic studies should clear that. for my part I concentrate on breeding for the moment.

Yes, they are very nice and interesting loaches. I like them
very much. Especially during feeding time they are very
active and it is fascinating watching them.
