where to send a Panda Loach

Post by Uncle.Ned »

Don't know if the species is new to science
but it's only a few months old in the hobby

we got in from a trans shipper
several "panda Loaches"
1 died in shipping in pretty good condition
...right now I have it soaking in 80 proof vodka
(hope that's strong enough)

I was wondering if anyone knew an icthyologist working with loaches
who would want the body

The only person in your area I can think of that might be interested would be Mike Ophir. I think he signed the loach book he (as well as several of us from this site) contributed to, at your store a few years ago. I'm not sure if he still lives in the area though. I will see if I can get a message to him.
By the way, I used to have friends in Uxbridge and visited your store a few times. You always had a great selection. I took home several gastromyzons in 2002 and just lost the last of them a few months ago.

I thought he was an MD
not an icthyologist !
LoL

anyway
I'll try him..

I was hoping some1 would know some1 who could use the dead material for dna or whatever
I think it's a rather new loach

I can mail it anywhere
it's about an inch
and it's in a 3 inch nip of vodka

Doug Sweet was the former curator of the Belle Isle Aquarium in Detroit,Mi. and he has experience with loaches and may be interested in the specimen you have...if it's still available that is.
I'm not sure if he is on this forum so let me know and I will contact him.

there you go ...
that is almost certainly the fish

Thanks!

... although
not 100% same pattern

10 of mine have more vertical bands
2 of mine have definite horizontal bars
the 1 in your pic above is sort of between the 2 pattern-wise

body shape is identical

Exact name is Yaoshania pachychilus. ´Protomyzon` never was the right genus name. Protomyzon are endemic to Borneo.

Hi
If you want so see more
http://www.seriouslyfish.com/forums/fre ... chychilus/
A "species preservation-project" by 10 breeders is going on in Europe, alimented by an importer with 10 specimen for each selected breeder. At least it could supply the market if successful.
In my eyes only habitat protection can prevent a extinction of a species. And there I'm pessimistic.
