ID help on "Chinese Giraffe Loach"?

Postby Caleb » Wed Mar 14, 2012 5:34 pm

Hey guys! I've found hardly any info on some new loaches I got, and was hoping to get some opinions here. I found a pair at a local shop, labeled as Chinese Giraffe Loaches. Image
could they be Crossostoma (Formosania) Stigmata?

can't really see it in the pics I managed to get, but they have 4 or 5 short barbels around their mouth. they've grazed my myrio plants down to bare stems around the base, and will eat any traces of algae, along with frozen foods and pellets. this is my first adventure into loaches, so I'll soak up any info I can get! thanks a bunch. :D

It may not be this species, but its probably another in this genus.

I think you're correct with the f. stigmata. Wetspot in Portland was marketing these back in December. Nice!

After looking at the fish again, I think I have to agree that it might be F. stigmata instead of Vanmanenia due to the larger head and barbels.

I've never had these and surely wouldn't take a stand as to what they actually are. Just going by what I've read. The genus seems to be a mess and I'm confused as to whether formosiana or crossostoma is valid. I think we can agree that they come from moving, well oxygenated water, and they're beautiful!
