Loaches Online Forum

Hi everyone,

I am back into the hobby after being away from it for about 15 years. I started with a 75 gallon tank for ropefish but then one day I spotted a hillstream loach in the pet store... I was fascinated. I started doing research and am in the process of creating a "river tank". When I have completed it I will try to submit pictures.

Right now I have: Pangio oblonga, Pangio kuhlii, Nemachelius pallidus, Schistura obeini. (I think I have become a loachaholic )

I have been a frequent visitor to Loaches Online and I plan to get the new book.

I am really looking forward to learning from all of you.

Are you thinking of keeping kuhlis in the new river tank? If so, remember that they prefer slower moving water and slightly higher temps than most hillstream species... You might want two separate tanks.

No, the kuhlis are happy in the 75 gallon. I plan to put Gastromyzon, Sewellia, and/or Beaufortia spp. in the river tank. The species will depend on what my LFS can get in. Loaches do not seem too popular here in Edmonton (yet).

a million (20+) years ago there was a shop in Edmonton that was one of the best in western canada and had... everything, including plenty loaches.

I'd be curious about khulis in faster flowing water... with larger gravel/cobble substrate i bet they'd love it. F-W pipefish seem to have a similar body shape and are poor swimmers, but we find them in the thick of the riffle.

It's funny. I lived in Edmonton for five years, and I cannot recall seeing a single fish store. Must not have been on my radar at the time.

Most of the stores were pet stores with fish; however, in the last few years Big Al's has come in and a couple of other smaller stores are specializing in freshwater or saltwater fish.
