I was having a good rummage through my new copy of Mergus Aquarium Atlas 6 and came across these pictures:





And this is the text that goes with them:



Now my German isn't brilliant but a few words I did pick out are:

Zucht form = breeding form
Aquarium Moskau = Aquarium Moscow
Rubland = Russia
Durch = through
Injektion = injection
Bereits = already
nachgezogen = done likewise

I have to admit that if memory serves me well the fish in the first picture looks very much like Martins hybrids, if these are definite hybrid fish it is surprising and shocking that they are trying to give them a latin name in Botia sp. "lineomaculata"

Emma also picked out these:
moglicherweise = potentially
mutierende = mutation
kunstlich = forced
befruchtete = impregnation

It would be much appreciated if one of our German members could translate a bit more of the text.

Our beautiful beloved clowns should be left as they are. And attempting to fit them up with a latin name is ludicrous!

it is terrible. it wouldnt be so bad if the "latin" name they are giving it was whatever the species is x macracanthus. at least then we would know. i think this system is used in plants sometimes.

i still dont get why people are doing this.

I think the more people get into loaches , the more they realise there is no need for man to interfere as nature always does it better

The one copy I don't have as well.. Interesting reading and throws a little more light on the hybridisation and how long it has been going on.

Sorry but I think they're ugly. I feel sorry for the fish, really sad.

Looking at the markings I would hazard a guess at most likely almorhae maybe an outside chance of histrionica, if I had to put money on it though my bet would be almorhae

Tattooing of fish actually started a few years ago and the first fish to have it done to them were arrowana, if I remember right it started in Singapore and people were getting their favourite brand logo added to the fish almost as a fashion accessory

As pricey as Asian Arowanas are I'm surprised they would tattoo them. I had them in the US in the 70's and 80's before CITES. I can't seem to find any pics of them with tattoos. I like the colored ones better.

damned ugly

i sometimes see tinfoil barbs with red alternating redscales tatooed at a local pet store and its pretty disgusting.

i must say these clowns arent that attractive. looks most likely like a clown and a yoyo hybrid .

martian's histironica clowns look slighly more natural looking. i wonder why the red shows on these and not the others.

These fish would and should shock the eyes of all loach enthusiasts. You can't invent an Airedale Terrier from wild fish stocks. It's creepy, IMO, and pointless. The result should not even be honoured with a scientific name - loose as these are, apparently.

While I obviously lack the go-getter spirit of some fish geneticists, this can hardly count as even a minor success. I wonder how these mutated fish managed to be recognized in a book. A respectable book? Someone can make the case for this, I'm sure.

Love the loaches you find and have access to. Take better care of these amazing fish!

Mutated or hibrids they need to be classified anyway. This would also be the best way to avoid them.
