Wondering if anyone can suggest a loach that would do fine in small numbers - as a single, in 2s or in 3s in a tank.
Thanks.

well i wouldnt get a clown loach they can get really big quickly too you would need a 55g long at least... i would get 3 yoyo loaches they will grow to about 5 inchs in about 5 years and have almost the same behavors clowns too. they do best in schools of 3 of the same size so its best to buy them all at the same time. also if you dont already have some salt in your tank i would recommed adding some fresh water aquarum salt to help keep ick down. thes fish are very prone to getting ick

KUHLIS! Small (3-4"), peaceful, hyperactive, psychedelic, mesmerizingly eel-like, and tolerate a wide range of water parameters.

I would not suggest any fish that get longer than about 3" (well, maybe 4") for a tank of 36 gallons, though Kuhlies are so thin, they would be good.
What shape is the tank? If it is long and low there is more floor space for bottom dwelling fish. If it is a tall, narrow tank, then there is even less floor space.
Certainly not Yoyo Loaches.
Zerbas are pretty easy going, they might be good.
