Hi all.

I introduce several kinds Cobitis inhabiting Japan this time.
Complexity of the species differentiation of Cobitis is understood by a study of the recent gene analysis.
It is impossible they are too complicated, and to distinguish their species only by an appearance.

Very nice stuff, the Cobitis sp should be C. striata, which occurs in japan.

any ideas about the right one? Looks very similar to my unknown Cobitis:

have you a photo from the side?

Cheers, Thomas

This was sold as C.biwae. However, it may not be so.

C.biwae, C. striata, C.matsubarai, C.takatsuensis, C.shikokuensis are written down
in the Japanese Cobitis genus, but it is not only five species.
http://mayatan.web.fc2.com/BUNRUI/Cobitidae.htm

Cobitis except C.takatsuensis and C.shikokuensis are unfiled taxonomically,
and they are the species group that a lot of species / subspecies are included in.

The scientific name of Cobitis classified with a characteristic of the appearance
is going to be reviewed once by a recent DNA analysis result.

This is an example of the DNA database of the Japanese freshwater fish.
