LOL British meeting 08/12/2006

The British contingent of LOL met up at the shop again today, and present this time were myself, Graeme, Mark, Helen, Les and Adam. :D Martin was sadly missed this time, but he assures me that he was going for a McDonalds this afternoon in order to get in the mood of the day! (Graeme and Mark know what I mean! ).

It was great to see everyone again and much time was spent talking about all things loachy. Poor Adam was feeling rather delicate as yesterday evening was his works Xmas do, so three cheers to him for actually making it! 8)

Les was kind enough to bring some young Pseudogastromyzon cheni over with him - some for Graeme, and some for the shop. I must say I'm quite tempted by these little chaps, if only I could persuade a certain someone that there is room to squeeze another River Tank in!

Mark bought a good amount of his young tank-bred Ancistrus with him in exchange for credit towards some other fish. These were both the standard and albino types and looked in great shape. :D

After a time spent catching up with each others news and much drooling over certain species, we headed back to my house to see Marge & co and to catch Graeme his 3 young Sewellia lineolata from my fry tank. I didn't feed the clowns last night in the hope they would all come out to greet their guests, and after dropping in some of the pellet food Mark very kindly bought with him for us to try, most of them ventured out. Marge took a bit of persuasion, but eventually put in an appearance. She'll get rewarded with a good amount of her favourite prawns later. This was the first time Adam had seen her, and although he was a little the worse for wear (!) I hope that he enjoyed being able to come and see her.

It's Graeme's birthday on Sunday, so I had got him a suprise birthday cake. Not any old cake I may add, but a 'Loach Cake'!
Image

It was a jam sandwich cake covered in icing, and onto the icing, they had printed (in edible ink) the picture of my choice, which in this case was a shoal of Yasuhikotakia sidthimunki:

(note it even says 'Loaches Online' on it!)

Graeme, I hope you liked the surprise and that you didn't eat all the remaining half a cake on the way home! :P

After we'd all made ourselves feel quite sick (the icing was rather thick), it was time to catch the baby Sewellia out of the fry tank and bag them up for Graeme to take back up North with him. After nurturing them for so long, I must admit that I felt quite sad seeing them go, but I know Graeme will look after them 'superbly'. Here's a pic of me handing them over:

Then it was back to the shop to start catching fish out for Mark and Graeme. The meeting was not as long as last time because of the fact it gets dark so early now and it's not nice for those who live further away to have to drive all that way back in the dark.

Anyway it was lucky that I had Steve to help with catching and bagging up and oxygenating the fish, as between them Mark and Graeme bought quite a number of different species! I hope they don't get in too much trouble with their other halves on their return. :? (the doghouse beckons....)

I'll let them tell you all what fish they came home with, and of course we'll all expect pics once settled in.

Here are some group shots of us all at the end of the meeting. Note the trolley full of boxes of fish that Mark and Graeme were taking back with them!

Good job Steve took more than one pic, as Mark is already wishing he was back home and asleep in the first one  :

And one more for the road:

After Mark, Graeme, Les and Adam had left, Helen and I had a good natter for an hour or so (I don't know where the time went) before heading off. It all went too quickly once again and am already looking forward to the next meeting with this fantastic group of people.

That cake is SO cool! (She told me about it yesterday Graeme)

Looks like you all had fun as usual. So Adam....what do you think to Marge then?

I'm suprised that you (Emma) and Helen found so much to talk about. You're both such quiet, reserved ladies

Anyhow.....I just put 4 Schistura balteata in my Q-tank. A credit purchase birthday present to myself for tomorrow.
So it's a LOL Birthday weekend, some of which will be spent checking out Graeme and Mark's photos which will no doubt be forthcoming.

LES...did you have your camera there? And did anyone get pictures of the elusive Steve?

Martin.

I almost forgot, in addition to the loachy cake, Helen also bought us several bags of the most gorgeous chocolate fish:

Image

Helen, you are naughty leaving a bag and a half of these at my house! (now down to one bag...... :P )

Martin - once again, I don't think anyone managed to get a picture of Steve this time. He always pulls funny faces in photos anyway!!!
By the way, congratulations on your purchase of the S. balteata, I'm sure you will enjoy them.

Jim - you should have seen the face of the lady who printed the cake for me. They usually print family pictures and portraits etc onto cakes - I don't think she quite knew what to make of me asking for a fish picture to be scanned in. I tried to explain that it was for a tropical fishkeeping club meeting, and she just gave me this really strange look!

I just want to chime in to say that i managed to deliver Adam back to his front door for a good dose of rest and then get myself home too.
It was an early start for me (not as bad as Mark and Graeme though!) up at 5:30 to catch and bag some Cheni youngsters, as usual they gave me a run around the tank as Martin's stone trick only worked for the first two, then off to collect Adam. I felt so mean making the early morning phone call to wake Adam at about 06:50 when i left the house, at least he managed to snooze in the car on the way up (quite impressive given my usual enthusiasm for cornering).

My thanks go out to Emma and Steve for playing the part of gracious hosts so well, it was lovely to walk into a fish emporium and be greeted like long time friends :-) Naturally Mark and Graeme were already there in the loach section glued to the tanks selecting their purchases. Cheni were exchanged (hope they are settling in well Graeme) and I started to check out the gorgeous Homaloptera confuzona in the stock tank which really worried Graeme who had tagged them for himself ;-) So many nice fish to drool over. Thanks to go out to Mark for scoring free samples of the new wonder foods, i'll report back on what my Hillies make of it!

I only had my backup camera with me was tasked with taking photos of potential dithers for the new river tank (Still not filled, thanks Tunze...) so missed the chance to take a picture of Steve, instead i thought i would share these shots of the young Cheni i took with me settling into the stock tank filled with the beautiful spotted Sewellia, they are a feisty bunch and not afraid to try it on with the bigger fish :-) it was interesting to see them interact with the big guys.

This is the first time they have been exposed to fish much larger than them selves and they looked quite shocked when they got shoved back. I missed the shot of one youngster perched on the back of a much larger Sewellia... he did not stay there for long.

It was great to meet up with everyone, my thanks to Graeme and Mark on the dither advice, it is now just a case of getting Susan's approval for them :-) Somehow I managed to score an excellent deal on two nice pieces of Mopani thanks to Steve so i came away very happy.

Oh my god - I cant believe how rough I look in those photos  I guess thats what you get after catching and bagging up 40 Bristlenoses at 3:45 am  .

I have just finished adding all the fish to their respective new homes and photos have been taken of them all so I will post some pics tomorrow.

It was nice to meet up with everybody again and nice to meet Adam for the first time and I had a great day, big thanks to Emma and Steve :D .

Here are some photos of my newest arrivals :D

Not that the quality of Emma and Steve's fish would ever be in question but I think these pictures prove without doubt that their fish are in the best possible condition, all these photos had been taken after the fish had been bagged, transported over 200 miles (over 4 hours) and then acclimatised for an hour.

Emma and Steve gave me these 3 Brochis Britskii, so can I once again thank them :D

The B. Almorhae with the damaged eye seems to be a very outgoing fish and was actually eating bloodworm out of my hand this morning

All fish have settled in really well and certainly don't look like new arrivals normally do which can only be credited to the care they received from Emma, Steve and all the staff at maidenhead Aquatics :D .
