new sids

Post by NancyD » Sat Feb 04, 2006 2:42 pm

I couldn't resist any longer :D . I went back to the shop with the small sids & 5 of the 6 looked good, 1 was still thin. Not "skinny disease" behind the head thin but not as much underside (depth?) beyond the front edge of the dorsal fin. When I said I'd take the 5 but was concerned about the little 1, the guy asked if I take him for free. Of course I said yes since they'd been together a least a month & I knew he'd be very unhappy alone. My 20gal Q tank was already set up with gravel, plants & used water + filter on the off chance
It's been a week & they're settling in nicely, the small 1 looks to have gain weight already. He looks especially cute with a 1/4 inch piece of blood worm trailing from his mouth & the rest in hot pursuit. They don't seem interested in veggies yet, do they eat them? I admit we never offered any when we had sids years ago.
The other thing I'm a little concerned about is the gravel size around 1/8 inch or so. They dig down head deep easily but 1 went past the tail-end of his dorsal & seemed to have a hard time backing out. Maybe he'll just have to learn & I need to get over the "new mom syndrome" ?

Total Jealousy, here

I've seen them here once, and they were $18.99 each. A few months after that, I attempted to have some ordered. I was told then that it was illegal to ship them to California????

Not fair  I want Sids, too.

Wow, Nancy, I'm jealous. I picked up two in January (all the store had) and am looking for more. I see you're in Massachusetts. Do you mind me asking where the store is and whether they had any more? Might be worth a drive up from CT.

Thanks!

Thanks Graeme, I'll keep trying with the veggies. Maybe they've tried them & I can't tell. Since I microwaved them a little the edges are kind of squishy when removed & the loaches are only 3/4 inch. It's hard to feed tiny amounts so I'm doing more water changes.
Ckfish, I bought the last 6 but it's Uncle Ned's Fish Factory in Millis Rte 109 between I495 & 128. He has a web site so you could ask. He had some shisturas (I think) of some kind just called long nosed sand loach if anyone is interested. He must not know exactly what kind of he'd put the latin name on.
