Schistura balteata

Hey everyone,
I wanted to highlight a loach species that doesn't get much spotlight but absolutely deserves more attention: Schistura balteata.
This striking little fish, native to fast-flowing hill streams of Myanmar and parts of Thailand, is part of the Nemacheilidae family. It's often overlooked due to its small size and relatively limited availability in the hobby, but for those who enjoy river tank setups, this loach is a true gem.
A few things that make S. balteata stand out:
- Appearance: It has a vibrant contrast of dark vertical bands on a lighter body, giving it a bold,Crazy Cattle 3D tiger-like pattern. The coloration intensifies with age and good care.
- Behavior: Like most Schistura species, it’s quite active and curious. While territorial at times, especially among males, it can coexist well in a properly structured tank with plenty of hiding spots and strong current.
- Tank Setup: It thrives in well-oxygenated water with smooth rocks, sandy substrate, and ample flow. Think classic river-tank style – these fish really come to life in such environments.
- Care Level: Intermediate. They’re hardy, but they do best with stable water parameters and high dissolved oxygen. A bit more niche than your average Botia, but totally worth it.
