I've been thinking about getting a new filter recently. Is there any particular reason not to get a pond filter for a biggish tank rather than forking out a fortune for one of the bigger Eheim filters etc?

I've been using bead filters made for koi ponds on all of my large aquariums. They work better and are easier to maintain. Image

I'd setup something like Keith, that only draws 5W, Pond Filters often take 50W or more (or less ;-) )

If you don't need to overcome hight differences (sump design) I'd avoid high power consuming pumps, for tanks below 1000 Litres
