Check out the two orange spots that came up in this photo on the caudal peduncle of the loach. Don't know what it is, and I've not noticed it before.
Could this be a further defense device? I want to go and look at all the B. dario photos again, but I don't recall seeing this. A trick of the light? Does this indicate sexual dimorphism? Maturity?
It is interesting. You got me looking at my pictures and i've found a picture which shows a darkened area which was never there, when they where juveniles. Must be a maturity spot!
If i remember correctly, i think Mark's B. dario was showing a much brighter orange colouration than mine. Smack bang in the center of the caudal peduncle.

Alas, this was one of the photos that disappeared when Coppermine cacked out. It's not on my hard drive anymore.
Graeme has it right, though. There was a very bright orange reflective spot at the extreme end of the caudal peduncle that caught the flash from the camera somehow. You can see the same patch on Graeme's fish, but it doesn't catch the light the same way. I had never noticed any detail on this part of the fish before, but this one photo really highlighted it.
How does a post from February, 2006 wake up this way?
D'oh! Sorry Mark, did not realise this was an old thread. Andy has obviously been digging around!
Were the spots anything like what you can see in this old pic of mine? I know it's not taken at a brilliant angle, but there are definite reflective gold spots on the caudal peduncle:
I must confess To having been doing a little spade work ! there are some really interesting topics in the vaults , hence i may don the khakis and exhume some more long lost treasures !
This one shows a bit of orange on the edges of the caudal peduncle. I wish i had a camera to take some up-to-date images. Anyone else got any pictures of there B dario?
Woderful pic Graeme ! i feel like starting up a new thread on Yoyo's just to entice you to show that wonderful copper based specimen ! ha ha you know the one i mean ha , though i must say some of the Yoyo's i bought about twelve months ago are starting to get that wonderful colouration , i assume it has to be a lacation caught thing ! the ones i had years ago seemed to have a more whitish base colour !
I have a dozen Almorhea with golden qaulities . I would agree they are much more golden than years past but I have seen other wild caught fish change color through the years also since the 1970's
