Botia Striata in Oz

Post by Botia Robert » Sun Feb 10, 2008 7:00 am

I was out and about in Brisbane on Sunday and pulled into Annerly Aquariums for a look since I havnt been there before. This shop was really well looked after. Everything was neat and tidy and all the tanks looked well planned.

The shop had quite a few nice display tanks with some unusual fish. I was looking at one attractive tank which had some rainbows until I caught sight of some lovely Yo Yos, which started following my finger across the glass. To see these fish up close is really something. B Almorhae is such an under rated loach. 8)

Anyway, while I was watching these beautiful Yo Yos, following in their wake was a Botia Striata! I have only ever seen this fish in pictures or on You tube, niether of which do it justice. Australia doesnt import this fish  so I was amazed and delighted at the same time.

This little fella had some character about it. It was swimming with a whole carcass (I dont know what of, the tank looked healthy) in its mouth and evading the interests of the 4 Yo Yos who wanted a taste. It wasnt a fat Striata (although athletic) and probably about 3" in lenght. The stripes on the body were resonably well divided and looked absolutely stunning. This is undoubtably THE most attractive loach/fish I have ever seen. :D

I got talking to the lady in the shop who was much more informed than most fish shop attendees I meet. She said they had the Striata for about 4 years and it came in as a contaminant. They have never noticed any since. They love this little guy too and he lives safe from sale in the display tank at Annerly Aquariums. :)

ABSOLUTELY..... I love mine ,I have about 20 many of which have a golden hue . They are fantastic when given a group to run around with. They do pale with age though. Give that Striata some cucumber next visit, they are crazy for it.....

Just made aware of these Botia Striata by this post.
Wow what a kewl loach.
I am saddened by the number of fish we dont have access to in Aus.
On a recent "aquarium crawl" around melbourne , It was hard to find anything "out of the ordinary " from one shop to the next.

That's the price you pay for living on the most unique of all continents. Some well-meaning but ill-informed hobbyists let their pets go when they can't house them anymore, and the results can be disastrous. I know it may be frustrating (I'm sure I would feel the same way), but when you consider the reason for it, you should be grateful that your fauna is protected the way it is (mind you I don't know why yoyos would be OK and striatas wouldn't.......)
Why does my aquarium always seem too small?

yeah I understand their reason for having restrictions bslindgren but as you also mention Im not sure why some are and some are not. I fear its more to do with sales than protection of fauna.
Consider the rabbits ;)

My thoughts exactly.

Why are Sids, Clowns and Yo Yos allowed but Histrionica, Kubotai, Striata, Rostrata and Dario are not allowed?

I can only hope that it is a case of the authoraties slowly becoming educated and accepting that the threat of these loaches is very low, even in this tropical climate.

Hi Robert , Just got your PM and I did pick-up 5 Rostrata from Kevin at Rocklea. They are doing fine, $15 is not too much to pay IMHO.
Kubotai are now on the Importable List.
I was in Noumea recently on a cruise so made a bee-line for the LFS where they had a tank full of Striata and just stood there mesmerised by these great fish. They also had Morletti and Syncrossus!!!!! I was thinking "How many can I fit in my waterbottle" Ha Ha Ha.
It was great to see them in real life.
I have a few leads on getting Striata's in Aus and will let you all know if any are succesfull. Cheers Graeme.

Can I ask how you know this? Do you work with inporting?

Thats really positive Graeme! I'm glad Kubotai are on the importable list, maybe Striata will follow suit.

I was at Aquarium Warehouse on the weekend. I managed to get the last 10 Kubotais. 8)

They also had some micro Clowns! I have never seen anything like it. They were only about 5 - 10mm long and were selling 10 for $15.

Hey Graeme,
I went into Exotics last monday to talk to the boys and Kevin was like "One of your loachy friends came in and bought some rostratas and told me you recommended us! Thanks!" haha I thought it was funny :)
Glad you managed to get some, they still have quite a few left. Have yet to get mine though due to being broke! Bloody horses.
