Crimson loach

Very quick question-are these aggressive? I bought 6 and I have seen no aggression at all and its been a few days.
They are in with Sinibotia sp, zipper loaches and three other Schistura sp that I have to get an id on (they don't seen aggressive, just love their food), and Red line torpedo barbs.
The question is, leave them in here, or give them their own 2ft that I already have sitting empty just for themselves?? Or can they hold it on their own enough with the other fish I have mentioned above???
Im easy either way so if someone with a bit of experience housing these could chip in about these it would be much appreciated!

My personal experience with them is from me keeping them in a 4ft tank and i can honestly say that i've never witnessed any real aggression from them towards each other. Yes, they do have the odd little spat with each other but it's more of nudge out of my way type matter.

Just keep observing them Ashleigh.

My experience with them is only through work - never kept them at home. At the shop, they created a complete bloodbath on both occasions that I got them in. This of course, was in the confines of the stock tanks. The first time, the tank contained plenty of decor, the second time I tried with none at all so that they couldn't argue over a territory. The males always seemed to be the most aggressive. I have also conversed with one of my suppliers about this and asked if he'd encountered the same problem. He said that they had found them aggressive and the only way to hold them was in large outdoor tropical pools that were filled with copious amounts of dried Indian Almond Leaves for them to hide amongst.

i have some ashleigh, mine are in a 3 foot river tank and the same as graeme iv'e not seen anything you could call aggression,
infact i saw 4 of them under a rock side by side.
emma's had a bad experience with them, but as she said they had loads all in the same tank.

btw graeme are yours still as brightly coloured as when you got them, mine have lost the vibrance from when i got them.?

Well Mick, since you nicked all the bright buggers.......

I know what you mean though. I'm pretty sure that i've got 2 males and 4 females. The males seem fine though, i would say they have lost a little bit of colour but my females seem to be gaining the odd bit of colour the longer i keep them.

The same supplier has also mentioned to me that they have observed brighter colours in catches of this species on a seasonal basis when the water temps are cooler.

Sorry, my mind is like a sieve.

I meant to mention it but obviously didn't. I'm in the process of obtaining exact temps, pH and hardness from someone who is at the collection location although I've no idea how long this might take.

Hmmm, Im verging on the 2ft for them, in my own selfish way-I want a tank beside the desk like I did last year so I can slack off and watch the fish instead

I got six of them in the end, what I think are 3 males and 3 females. They have been out feeding, and then dart back under their piece of slate, always a good sign

Emma-do you have anymore info about habitat apart from what is in the species index??

Oh on a slightly different note, Mick-you don't have any idea what Neil had labelled Red tail zipper loach is?? I havn't had a chance to get pic's to try and get an id, I actually have to do work this semester, can you believe it

sorry i could'nt meet you at niels but i was'nt feeling very well,
and before Graeme says it was the booze it was'nt, not unless its got anything to do with the ticker.

No, not those ones. There were others over by were the dario were, a schistura of some type, banded with hint of red on the tail-really narrows it down doesn't it

Could they have been the Rupelli ? a slight resemblence to horse faces ?

No, they were 100% schistura type loaches just by the corner you go around, near were the Botia dario are. Il post the pic's up I have later-they are only of them in the bag but it may help a bit. Their markings are pretty though

Edit-

Looks a bit like Schistura poculi but the markings near the front of the fish go the enitre way down the body to the tail, the snout is shapped like the zippers more so than the Schistura I have but it deff is Schistura of some sort, tail was red just at top and bottom, now has taken a fuller red apperance in one of the fish
