I have had 3 clowns for about 2 months now and around a month ago one developed a few small dots on his head. Immediately i medicated him for ick but after a few weeks they were still there and have gotten bigger. they looked as if he might have taken chunks out maybe by rubbing. that week instead of my normal 30 percent water change i did a 50 percent water change and added maracyne 2. I have been dosing regularly today the bottle ran out and sores are still present. I've looked everywhere online and the closest thing i can relate it to is hole in the head. It looks like his forehead is rotting away and nothing i do makes it better. I dont want to put him down b/c he is very active and eats like a pig but today i noticed that my smallest loach appears to be getting the same thing. Here shortly the fish will be going to a 180 but i refuse to put sick fish in that tank.
Please post some pictures of the fish in question. It would be helpful to actually see the detail of this.
By any chance does it look like this?-
If so, it's nothing to worry about, they are just tubercules.

The page is an excellent treatise by Adam Dagna relevant to HITH.

Here is a brief item about HITH and Hexamita.

I would follow the suggestions in the article that Jones posted: Top quality water conditions and rotation of foods, extra vitamins can help no matter what is the cause.
Martin has posted a very good food recipe for fish food that all my fish really enjoy. You could make up a batch of it and add medication to perhaps 1/4 of the food. Package the medicated food in a way that is really obvious that it is medicated.

38 tanks, 2 ponds over 4000 liters of water to keep clean and fresh.
Happy fish keeping!

That fish looks to have entered something .Could it have entered your filter seeking more flow. Increase your oxygen levels by increasing flow like a powerhead splashing the surface. This helps on many fronts. It is very red about the gills. What is your water change schedule and your tank parameters. That looks to be a slime coat issue and that usually means more frequent water changes are needed. I hope you are using sand in your other tank .Gravel is not condusive to good conditions as waste gets in it very quickly.Sand has no room between the particles so it is much better for your fish besides being softer on their mouth as they work it around.
Can you tell us more about the tank? What other inhabitants are in with him?
Size, temp, decor, filtration, water parameters?

I've never dealt with HITH but did have to find metronidazole for bloat.
Just wanted to input if you decide it is HITH and need to treat with Metronidazole. I found its pure form in smaller quantities at mops.ca as I'm in Canada. You can get pure metro from Dr. Foster and Smith in the States if you are in the US. Metro+ that they sell at BigAl's isn't pure metro and you don't know how much you are dosing so I didn't touch that product.
Best of luck.
