Cobitis sp.

today I've seen my first Cobitis loaches in real live. I know them only from pictures, till this evening

I dont know wich species is it, i could imagine that they were from japan or china. They weren't on the bill from the wholesaler, so I've no hints what species this could be. But I think china/japan could be right, but who knows

Hi Emma,

the smallest are 4cm (1,5 inch), the biggest 6 (2,3 inch).

They are Cobitis taenia!!

I've got a paper explaining how they spawn and how they got them to spawn. I'll dig that out in a minute.

Hi David,

I dont believe that this is C. taenia, the nearly solid line over the blotches I have never seen at C. taenia pictures.

At some fishes merge the blotches nearly to a thicker line. You can see what I mean here:

BTW: One female looks very thick...

Maybe a normal thick cobitis-female or an "eggs-inside-thick" female? I'm not sure.

your a lucky lad, iv'e not seen cobitis for a good number of years.
i would definitely say that is a female Thomas.
how many did you get you lucky person, i'd have bought the lot.

? As you can see the markings on cobitis are very variable. My moneys on Biwae
