They do look quite similar. But not the spots. Hmmmm?

They are beautiful. In Kottelat's Indochinese Nemacheilines book, it says this under the description for N. selangoricus:

There is a sub-proximal dark spot on branched dorsal rays 1-2. The distal two thirds of the last simple dorsal ray are dark. There are three rows of spots on dorsal fin and three vertical rows of spots on caudal fin.

It does look like a N. selangoricus, but could also be the similar N. spiniferus, there is also N. platiceps (less likely).

We can differentiate these by the extent of the lateral line, and also the presence of and shape of acuminate scales on the lataeral line. I will try and zoom in and have a look at the lateral line (if possible with these shots).

N. lactogeneus also has the spot on the peduncle but according to the literaure only small specimens have the bars.

I,m the lucky owner of these two funny loaches.

Can you also see if you can find the origin/location of the Loach from the lfs or supplier?

They have been collected at Belitung Island.

A bigger photo would be better.

This probably rules out platiceps then (which was unlikely based on the body pattern).

I'm sure Emma or Graeme could advise you on the posting of images.

Andy, although you mean kuiperi and that is supposed to be a synonym of N. selangoricus, bearing in mind it was described from Belitung Island you may be onto something there!

IF they are synonyms then it could lend more weight to it being selangoricus!
