Belated intro

Post by The Kapenta Kid » Wed Aug 09, 2006 5:55 pm

Hi, I 'm pretty new to the site.
I only recently started keeping hillstreams. Fascinating fish! I have G kweichowensis and G ctenocephalus at present. Here is one of my G kws.

Great pic -- here is one happy fish. It is a B.kws, not G.kws, but it does not seem to mind it.

What is that whispy looking plant in there? Is it only for cooler water?

That plant is actually some algae that is growing on the rock that the fish is lying on, and just out of frame. The same stuff is growing on the rock above the fish, but not so teased out by the current.

I had some of these algae or moss balls in the tank long ago. Some broke up and started to colonize driftwood and rock. It is attractive stuff, not a PITA like most algae, it grows fast, is easily trimmed when there is too much, the loaches snack on it, and it is a great nitrate sink. It grows at any temp, presumably rather cold in its Japanese lakes of origin, but it also thrives in my cichlid tank at around 26 or 80 degrees.
