When you guys do these shows, whose water is used? What's the setup on all that for aeration and water quality? Self contained for each fish, or are they sharing common water on those benches with possible cross contamination issues?? - Just curious, no plans on showing.
Every exhibitor has his/her own show tanks of varying sizes from as small as 4"x4"x4" (some associations allow smaller) up to 24" tank and bigger depending on the fish.

Every fish is put into its tank at home and the tank is sealed or the fish are transported in buckets and transferred into show tanks at the venue.

When the fish are on the bench small battery operated air pumps can be used in the tanks but these have to be switched off prior to judging, at conventions or large fish keeping events fish can be exhibited in special tanks that are built and divided into sections with a long section created along the back for heater etc.

Obviously it does put a lot of stress on the fish to catch them, transport them, bench them (always cooling down etc) and then getting them back into their tanks sometimes 12 hours or more later, obviously the better the conditioning if the fish the better they cope.

I have seen it from both sides as I did show and was a judge as well but I am glad I don't show fish anymore.

On average I would show around 30 to 40 fish at each show and in between the open shows we would have smaller table shows at club meetings.

mind Mark, i'm glad i did my years showing mate, it gives us a slight advantage over just fishkeeper in that we can spot a fish with the potential to be a really superb specimen.

Thanks for the rundown MD!

Between what I've heard from Mick and yourself, showing sounds like a full time job. Huge amount of work and anxiety! I can see how that would take its toll on fish and fishkeepers alike. Too much for me - I'd have to be medicated! :D

I could live without the shows, but wish we had the level of interest and participation in the hobby you Brits enjoy. Having knowledgeable fish stores to buy and learn from as well as a community to share information with must be wonderful.

If it wasn't for the internet and this forum, when I got back into the hobby I would have started up my loach tanks under the same set of incorrect information I had operated under previously. I was succesful, but I can already see much better results in my tanks this time around.

Thanks Again,
Keith

the shows were great and even the work we had to do to get the fish there, but the best about it was the bar or pub nearby, haha
i don't think i ever went to a show and did'nt come home bladdered.
there was always a crowd of us jabbering about fish bred fish bought and to speculate who would get best in show.

Sounds like maybe you should put up some photos of those glory days. Maybe some pics of some of the big fish shows from the 70's and 80's and of course some pub shots thrown in as well!
