I only have 3 Oblonga at the moment. I have to keep moving the ornaments in my tank around at least once a month or I NEVER see them. They just like to hunker down inside the main cave.
More pangios in the tank might help you see them more. Also, try a lot more hiding places if you can. My tank is a tangled mass of rocks, coconut caves, driftwood and plants. I also have a big pile of 1" to 2" diameter rocks that they really like. They seem to feel safe hanging out around that pile. They don't even slither away when I get close to the tank (unless I get too close with the camera.) Loaches feel safer to be out in the open if they know there is a quick hiding spot close by. If they don't feel secure, you won't see much of them.

Cute Pics! Just wondering even though they prefer sand is it possible to keep Kuhli's on small gravel?

Also forgot to ask - do you need a special filter for sand subrates?

From my extremely limited experience, I noticed when I kept them in gravel they liked to dig under the substrate more. They didn't seem to do it as much when there was sand at the bottom.

I don't think you need a special filter, I have regular filters on my tank now with the sand, but you have to be sure to turn them off if you're going to be doing any digging around.
