Early christmas-present

Post by JonasBygdemo »

My girlfriend gave me an early christmas-present a couple of days ago, and it was the "Loaches - Natural History and Aquarium Care" by Mark McDonald and Martin Thoene.

Most of you probably know about this book, and some of you have even contributed to the book. I recognized some names in the "Contributing Editors", so my guess is that you guys are on here as well :D

For those of you who don't know the book, you should really buy a copy! It's very comprehensive and just about everything you need to know about loaches is in this book. It even got my girlfriend a little hooked on loaches, and she got more in to my idea of getting a proper loach-tank.

I'm planning out a 450L~ tank filled with clowns, yoyos, and kubotais as we speak. We also need more space for our angels who live in an adequately tall tank, we just don't meet the volume requirements (120L and I think they need about 250L). Do you think that they will be okay with the added circulation from an extra powerhead? We'll probably end up buying a bigger tank for them somewhere in the future, but housing them in the 450 until we can get a tank for the angels.

My wife got me the Loach book for Christmas, though she hasn't let me open it yet. :(

I bought it for myself, and I love it!

Was in the fish store last week, and asked how much the Sumo Loach in the display tank was. The kid didn't know what a Sumo Loach was, and went to ask the manager, who came over. I pointed him out and she said "I didn't know what those were!" I wen toff to pick up some supplies, and when I came back the manager was searching the book -- I just picked it out of her hands and turned right to the Sumo Loach page (I know my way around it very well already) for her.

The book is really fabulous. If I didn't already have it I would get it for my husband for Christmas!

She asked me what I wanted for Christmas and that was the only item on my list. The next week a box from Borders appeared in our mailbox. She wouldn't tell me what was in it, but we both know I guessed right. :D

So glad everyone's enjoying the book (I know I'm torturing those who are not allowed to read their copy yet  )
Most of the contributors are still posting here and I believe we're all very happy that the book is getting such positive reactions from everyone. We set out to fill an obvious void that existed in aquarium literature and I think we succeeded pretty well.

I don't think Mark and I will ever be happy with how it looks though. If we could have had full artistic control over the picture content I think we would have blown your socks off

Martin.

It doesn't feel like torture quite yet. There are still two weeks until I'll get to read it. Torture will start at T- 1 week. As much as I'm looking forward to reading the book, I'm anxious to sit down with my children and show them the pictures of the loaches I want to put in my tank. I think they will enjoy the pictures almost as much as I will (until my tank cycles that is). :D

Thanks to you, and all those who contributed, for putting in the effort to make the book available to us Martin!

Haha nice! Let's hope she didn't buy you a book about something else, otherwise it could be an awkward surprise!

Martin: Artistic freedom or not, the pics are great. I liked the scale pics of the big clowns, and Hanna (gf) got a real shock when she saw them. I've been telling her how big clowns can get, and she's been like "yeah yeah, stop talking about them already!", but then I showed her the pic and told her it was a scale pic of them, and she was amazed by the size of them (myself included!), we didn't fully understand how high their backs can be!

Yes, it is an excellent resource for keeping loaches in your aquarium.

I bought one for myself as well as one for my aquarium club reference library ... it always checked out :)
