Hillstream loach id?

Post by kplesner »

A local aquarium fish shop in Copenhagen has a hillstream loach for sale. They call it Gastromyzon boreneensis, but that's not a valid name as far as I know. I seem to remember reading somewhere that it has been used as a synonym for Pseudogastromyzon myersi, but that looks even less like the fish they have for sale.

The shop has a picture of the fish here: http://planteimporten.dk/vis.php?type=art&art_id=806

Can anyone help a little identifying this species?

Looks like beaufortia. Not a gastromyzon, not from Borneo. Chinese

I think you are right, looks like a Beaufortia kweichowensis.
Once again, an instance of the name chaos in some shops.
Just one example:
A few weeks ago i order Sewellia sp. spotted form a local fish shop and what I got Gastromyzon ctenocephalus

Thanks a lot. Am I right in thinking that the fish in the picture is a fairly young specimen? I haven't seen adult Beaufortia kweichowensis with such bright colors before?

I went to the shop in Copenhagen and saw them in real life. They were indeed Beaufortia kweichowensis. Most of them weren't as brightly colored as the one in the picture.

What is the general coloration of the species? If they are generally bright I am about to add to my collection, if not I'm not so interested. I just upgrade my tank with a nice set of discount filters and am ready to add to my fish family, but I need a little bit more information before I make a decision. Thank you in advance for any information regarding this species and how they will fit in to my new clean tank!

In the shop, they often look very pale.
But when they settle in they show their full beauty.
Sewellia species like S. lineolata, S. speciosa or S.sp. spotted are more colorful.
