You empty out and clean your (gravel like) filter media into a bucket, only to forget that your bucket full of dirty water actually has loads of filter media in it and you dump it onto your lawn whilst disposing of the water? Took me ages to pick most of it up. Curses.

I never clean my biological filter media. I just change the filter floss and rinse out the sponges.

I run the used aquarium water from the tank to a plastic storage box and clean media in there. Then I use a pump and garden hose to get the dirty water out to the garden. The little bit of water that the pump cannot pick up is too shallow to hide anything like filter media of any sort.

I rinse my media in old water but that's all. In the case above I was stripping down my old tank now no longer in use
