Bought as a yoyo, but....

Post by Biulu »

I bought 5 of these fish about a year ago to keep my lonely yoyo company, but I am now convinced they are not yoyos. Can anybody tell me what they are? Thanks!

Histronica and rostrata often have that ladder-effect of vertical bars connected by a short horizontal bar.
Kuobtai almost never do, but are more of a spotted pattern. Look into them, anyway.

Kubs definitely change their pattern as they grow, so might at some point (as a juvenile especially) look sort of like that. If you have had yours a while (several months at least) you may have seen them change their pattern. Its worth a look.
Here is a link to the kubotai, and within that are links to the other 2.
Look at several pictures of all these so you get a better feel for what they look like, as they all are somewhat variable.

Happy fish keeping!

Thanks! I have had mine for about a year now and I have only seen the vertical stripes being joined by a small horizontal stripe. I am not completely sure but I think mine look more like rostratas than histrionicas. They are definitively not kubos as I would have seen their pattern change more drastically within the time that I have them now.

I won't use the word "definite" here, but the loaches in those pictures look almost identical to my B. Histrionicas. The body shape and pattern markings match my histies so closely that they almost look like photos of my own fish! If it were my call to make, I would label them as such. :D
