I think you click them once?

double-clicking gets them twice, so I'm not sure why you don;t get them - works for me in Firefox as well as Safari. should be IE compatible too, most forums are designed for it I think. You can also do the basic ones just by typing them in, eg semicolon-dash-close bracket produces this: . They don't show up as you're typing the message except as the code, no matter how you produce them, but they do in preview.
