Yasuhikotakia morleti

Post by Mark Janssen » Sun Nov 19, 2006 8:27 am

Yesterday i've bought 4 new fish (Yasuhikotakia morleti) they were rather small about 3cm, but with a price 2 euro's i couldn't resist.

they are in the tank with the kubotai and the frenatus (13-14cm).

they get along fine with the kub's, but the frenatus and the mor's are at war!! they don't move a millimeter when the big frenatus try's to scare them away... they even nip at is tail when it turns away!!

the kub's don't realy care much about the new arrivels only when palyfighting when a 3 times smaller skunk want's to join in...

Keep a close eye on them, Mark. They might have been a bargain, but they are very aggressive and can do a lot of damage to other fish. Here's our updated profile:

I kept 4 of these guys in the past. I didn't notice much serious aggression to other species. Much like a Serpae or Tiger Barb when they dish out their friendly little nibbles. The oinly things they seemed to bother were other bottom feeders. Maybe its just me, but I thought the older they got the less they paid attention to other species.

They were pretty entertaing fish. Always zipping around the tank after each other clicking the whole time.

i know emma, if they get to agressive they wil get a home just for them...

but any other fish that i had were killed and eaten (not all) by my kub's...

only the frenatus gets there full load since he doesn't want them around his coconut bunker (yet) and chases them around.

the new arrivels act like they are kub's by hanging en swiming around with them. even sleep together (if the kub's sleep onder the wood and not on top the morleti don't show themselfs when napping/resting.

i spotted one diving under the sand with only his eyes and nose viseble...

so far so good i put in extra wood for hiding places but they prefer the javaverns at the moment...

the frenatus leaves them alone and there is no more fighting between them.

i'm already planning an new tank for them (since i want 4 more of them)

would 100cmx40cmx40cm be sufficiant?

I certainly don't think so... thats barely bigger than 3x1ft...

Perhaps a five by 2? (150cmx60cm?)

Because of their highly territorial nature, I wouldn't recommend housing them in a tank that is less than 4ft in length long-term.

So 120cm should be enough?

When I first started with fish I bought some of these for my community tank because the book I had said they were peaceful. They ripped my Corydoras' fins to shreds.

A friend of mine got some too and hates them to this day!

(not the fishes fault I know)!

space won't be a problem now i've found a 2meter (500l) aquarium for 150€ and it's in great shape!

more dan enough room for 4 of those with the rest of my fish, but none the less i wil wait till they are larger before i decide if i get more of them (or get more but in a seperate thank setup).
