Loach Eating Vegetables

Post by YellowFinned »

Prepared as described in the loach.com web-site, micro-waved and weighed down with a stone:

Cucumbers
Loaches don’t touch them, but the Majestic Shelter did.

Carrots
Thought the carotene would add extra colour if it got in the food chain.
Nothing touched them.

Cauliflower
A reserved reception, and then after a few hours, raving loach gluttony.
Same in three tanks with various loaches.

Will have to try a few other veggies.

Mine won't touch the three veggies you list there, but they love broccoli (which makes a mess as they tear it apart and I have to clean out the filter a few hours after feeding), and courgette (=zuchini) with the very middle taken out.

mine go nuts for bananas (watch carefully, makes water foul * do it before cleaning*) and zuccini... i tried peas and they just played with them... broccoli didn't work for mine, cucumber also works!

You might also try some frozen peas. If you blanch these in boiling water for just a few seconds - so they're not frozen - you can easily peel the outer skin off. Pop one in the tank and watch them go into soccer mode.
Your vantage point determines what you can see.

I think it's just the language ...
"Loach eating vegetables" instead of "Loaches eating vegetables" 8)

didn't even occur to me that it could be the vegetables eating the loaches! You guys watch 'Little Shop of Horrors' lately?

YellowFinned, you can view some pics of my clown loaches eating a couple of different types of fruits at these links:

Watermelon: http://forums.loaches.com/viewtopic.php?t=1861

Honeydew melon: http://forums.loaches.com/viewtopic.php?t=1211

They also really enjoy cucumber, but I think my old pics of them eating this are probably archived in the old forum.
