Emma Turner uses something called 'silica sand' in a lot of her tanks.

I used 3M colorquartz in mine. It's a manufactured sand. Very round, uniform, and comes in a bunch of colors (I wanted a black substrate). It also comes from pool supplies and flooring companies.
