Loach Motel, Rooms for Rent

Post by BlueFrog »

We built this little motel out of PC Monitor stand legs, rocks, a piece of slate and some aquarium silicon

Once it went into the tank, it immediately had a series of temporary residents :)

That's wonderful! 8) But I think you'll be constructing Loach Motel version II pretty soon, as those little clowns will be set to grow quite rapidly!

Yep, its open in the back -- the same thing could be done with PVC piping, but the monitor stand legs were free ;)

And i'm keeping an eye out for new materials for Loach Motel II -- i think the little guys actually grew while i was away!

That's very cute. Sink a bit of tubing and clowns will come! I'd be interested to know how they use it at different times of day, and the way light hits the front of the tank from a direct source - like a lamp or tv after their lights are off. You may want to angle it differently or shade them from this somehow - if that's the case.

But cool! And kudos for recycling an old desk.

Looks like the loaches are really making good use of this one. Great Idea. Thanks for sharing.

The tank is a non-standard shape, and the front of the loach motel is pointing away from direct sun and the tv as well (plus the lights are on a timer and go off for most of the day, at least during the summer to try to keep the temps down). I find that the loaches seem to like the lower levels best and hang out there on and off throughout the day, often with the clowns kicking the dojos out when they want the space.

The pipes are about an inch and a half tall, and about 5 inches long. Sadly, i know they're going to outgrow it sooner than later, and i'll have to build the version 2 (and move this one to another tank).
