Interesting fish (non-loach) for hillstream tanks:

Post by Emma Turner »

The other week I received a shipement of Akysis longifilis. The markings share a very close resemblance to that of the 'Red Lizard Loaches' (Homaloptera confuzona, H. orthogoniata etc):

(This picture shows a newly imported fish, they came in a little thin).

What I find interesting about these little catfish (2" max) is that not only do they resemble the red Homaloptera species, but they also enjoy the same extreme fast-flowing habitat.

No doubt they would be egg/fry-munchers, but if this wasn't of concern, they look like they'd make excellent companions for hillstream loaches. I know many people already know about keeping these Asian Stream Catfishes in these situations, but I wanted to highlight the similarity in markings of this particular one! 8)

Very cool! Harold ordered and will hopefully get in two different species of Glyptothorax cats today.
I must take my camera down there as he was expecting all sorts of neat stuff.

Martin.

I need to set up a hillstream tank! It's in the interest of my continuing mental good-health.

I would go with the four footer if you can. You'll fill a three footer quicker than you can imagine once you are assimilated.

Exactly my thoughts as well. I think I might go crazy otherwise  lol. I just got to get my clown loach tank finished and then hopefully over winter will work maybe on a hillstream tank.

I need to set up another hillstream tank. Jim's right, 3 feet of hillies just isn't enough. Those are lovely fish- another one to add to my list of fish I really need to keep one day.
Fast and bulbous!
