I did wonder whether these would be feisty. There don't seem to be too many people who've had experience keeping them, and most of what we have heard has been good. But about 30 mins after letting them out last night, they did seem to be becoming a little snappy with one another. But to be honest I didn't get very much time to observe them, so will see how things go and report back! I have a feeling that the curator of the Newcastle Aquarium might be wanting some....

Hi Emma , in all the times i've had them they've been fine ! they are a wonderful looking fish , looking at those makes me wanna get a few , ha ha .

Ah, the memories.

My first loach was one of those yellow-finned buggers. Got him cause the hubby liked him. He was god of the tank. Had all the other red-finned modestas cowering in the corners as he cruised his center space (a good 75% of the tank!) on constant Defcon 1.

To this day I don't know for sure what he was. Eos? Lecontei? Yellow morph modesta? Can't say. He disappeared one day. Literally. Just. Was. Gone. No sign of him/her anywhere, no previous signs of illness, nada. Just gone.

Do they all have that black bar by the tail? My lecontei similar in body shape but without the black bar was only agressive towards the tiger and beauforti. Overall it was peacefull.

On the other hand, I vaguely recall purchasing some yellow fins at least the LFS called them yellow fins and they do look very fimilar. These yellow fins were super fiesty. I got rid of them shortly. Its been so long so I dont remember for sure.

Remember the pirannah movies from the 70's? Emma needs to film these gentle creatures taking bloodworms from her hands!

I had only one which I rescued as a contaminant in a tank of some other fish..? She/he was the one loach I never missed.

Well what a mixed reaction we have on these chaps ,the ones in this pic of Emmas are in my mind true bona fide Leconte's !
There is a fish that looks like a Modesta [in shape ] i.e deep bodied that has a beautiful yellow tail , but the main difference is that ,instead of having a yellow or a red [Modesta ] dorsal fin , the dorsal is the same colour as the body i.e. bluish grey ! i've had these without problems ! but always kept about half a dozen , i suspect that if kept as a lone specimen then problems could occur as they are powerfully built , and if provoked could possibly do some damage , i'll be very interested to see how people go with these Leconte !

I used to have 5 fish years ago in England that were basically modesta shape but baby blue in colour with ALL yellow fins. Beautiful fish.
I kept them with regular deep coloured modestas and the big boss Alpha used to literally swim through the pale blue ones as if they didn't exist. Very weird behaviour. You'd have thought they were invisible.

Like this, but really beautiful pale blue metallic.

Years ago I saw a tank of fish that looked superficially like the one's Emma has (which match what I have now) but they were slightly longer bodied with extremely thin, hazy stripes bridging the lateral line (like some Skunks have.) They were around 3.25" SL too, not babies.

Thanks Yellowfinned, those pics are of the fish i've been trying to describe ! note the dorsal ,its the same colour as the body , wheras in Modesta the dorsal is the same colour as the tail !
Yellow finned are these the ones you caught in your local canal ?
i m o, these are a nice sp/ to keep they do well in small groups i.e. about six fish or more , never really saw any aggression aimed at other fish ! they seemed to form a pecking order among themselves , and were a joy to watch .
i think these are an undescribed sp/ ! as for their size i would suspect they grow to at least 6 inches ?
I've had many a chat with The Dark One about this fish , thanks again Yellow finned .
