It's a 30" long something or other. It used to have a 24" flourescent in it, but the ballast crapped out. I just gutted the works out of it and cable tied the Christmas lights into the reflector. Kept the original supply cable for the flourescent and just joined the light cables to that.
Not ultra-bright through deep water, but gives a nice subtle light. Cheap too.

hmmm. I happen to have a defective light for a 10g...problem is, how do I fit it on the tank? Not room for both on top, and I don't want to be taking off and putting on every night.
I'll have to think on it...

Yes, unfortunately that's the problem. Loads of light during the day, but nowhere to put the thing unless you do go swapping them around. I think I might put this on the Clown tank as the CF on there died and it was too bright for the Clowns anyway.

Well, the kids always string christmas lights around their beds sometime in November, and they keep them up till they die (usually by April

). Maybe I'll just plug a string in and drape it across the bamboo in the back of the tank. . .

Just watch out your oddball

Very cool adam, thank you!
And if I go the xmas light route, I'll get the blue ones. should look really nice in the kitchen hanging from the bamboo.

Try to get the new LED ones instead of the old incandescants which overheat and dont put out much light.
The LED ones cost like a penny per year of power too. so efficient.
Odds are true blue LED xmas lights will cost more though, as a BLUE LED is pricier than making a white one and screwing it into a blue translucent casing, which might suit you just the same.

An even better one is
http://www.thelebos.com/main/cgi-bin/mo ... s_nano.cgi
just managed to find it in my sent box, this one has a timer to simulate the moon state, 10% for new moon 100% for full moon, apparently a realistic moon cycle makes some fish more likely to breed
smaller too so should fit better into a standard hood

One option for adding a second strip is to get a glass top to replace the typical plastic hood that comes with the light. That way you can set your second strip along the front. You have to set it on top of the back one to get into the tank but unless your tank is huge its not a big deal (at least to me). This is how I have my 20 gallon set up but both strips are daylight right now.

The problem I have with my Sewellia tank is there are already two strips on it, so there's nowhere for a blue light.

It does have a glass top with one strip light right now. If I put another one on it means moving it to open the front strip for feeding/maintenance, etc...
HERE is a pic of the tank. The val is slowly starting to grow back, and I'm leaving the mess of roots that are around because the new shoots are coming up out of it. Learned my lesson--don't clean out the tank too much! Let it do it's thing.
24 shots and all of them either glare will blind you or they are out of focus...one day (in my infinite free time) I will have to learn how to use this camera!

Here is a pic of my River Tank under blue moon lighting. It is actually slightly brighter than the photo shows it, and the fish seem to be very active during the time it is on.
Someone's been digging around that manifold...

Shari,
the 2nd link I posted the lights are this big
looking at your pic you could put a pice of 1"x1" wood accross and fit them on there maybe?
