They run about $60 for one that handles up to 300 gallons, sand is the media , has a high surface area, and looks like it would be perfect especially for hillstreams.

Fluidized bed filters are
highly efficient biologically, but you still need a mechanical filtration system in addition.
I home-made one many years ago when they first came into vogue, but you're generally better off buying one because the design is very critical in keeping the sand in suspension.

sweet, someone understands!!
now, i know i'm going to have a big piece of bogwood (real or resin?) about 2.5' long. i'm going to cover the top half with java ferns..but i dont know if i want to have any other live plants (bad experience with ferts.)
so i was thinking of just having silk plants..you can get then fairly realistic now..i also saw this kinda ceramic root system at walmart (made by marina) and that looked pretty cool, almost real..
i might go to a great fish store here tomorrow, look around and buy some stuff maybe (i'm at my grandma's house until friday, and she lives by the store) i remember they had a 90 gallon clown loach tank, the fish weren't even for sale! haha.

these questions are in no way related to my plans of the 55g tank:
1. how well do loaches (particularily yoyos) get along with red-tailed black sharks?
2. how many rtbs should you keep? i heard they are solitary, and are aggressive to other sharks...maybe to loaches
