Hmmmmm......what amazes me with this is the very serious thought and research that's being put into finding the answer. Considering there's no prize to be won I think it is a testament to the inquiring nature of the Loach-keeper's mind that most of you are being deductive about this rather than taking wild stabs.
Now if I'm going to be strict with the rules, I guess I have to be strict with my interpretation of the wording of the answers. So nobody has got it right yet, but three people are so close it's untrue and one person has even mentioned the actual year without specifically making it their answer.
Work that one out
Martin.

so as you have hinted that my yesterdays choice for todays answer is a bit far off, is it 1946?
i had thought maybe you were teasing us and it was a reprint in 2004 or somewhen.
Shazam you do seem to be quite photogenic

there are some times at uni when it is a very good thing there is no camera around, or if tehre is everyone has forgotton how to use it.
is anyone feeling inspired to compose the song "shari the red nosed ......" that was a funny picture.

And from just off the M3 comes a correct answer!
It's from October 1946. I couldn't believe that angelfish83 mentioned '47 in the very first reply, but it was close, but no cigar.
I have a bound version of the magazine given to me by my Uncle many years ago. It runs from April 1946 to March 1947 and is a very interesting record of this hobby rising from the ashes of WW2.
I note that it
is actually called the
Aquarist and Pondkeeper, but for some reason THE AQUARIST appears at the bottom right of each left-hand page as you look at a pair.
I'll scan some more of it. The advertisements make interesting historical reading.

Nothing's wrong with the A47.....it just doesn't pass Fleet in Hampshire is all.
If you had got it right, I would have said....
And just of the A47 (which is a really nice road since the dualled it apart from the roundabouts and the stupid single-track bendy bit just before Acle) comes a correct answer.
But you didn't, so I didn't.
I have a particular affection for Fleet Services on the M3. When I was working for AA Relay, I spent many a happy hour sitting there watching the bunnies hopping about
