I think this is the most covered song of all time, but it all began with Edwin Starr - a titan of soul.

I can think of a few covers... The Jam did a great one, DOA did their punk tribute... Very few on line. Count your blessings.

I did find this little gem from Down Under - a first for me, and quite cathartic.

Someone spent more than a little editing time producing this...

The End of the World by REM, feat. George W. Bush.

Amazing.

I never read this post because it was so long, and I had a little time tonight, and wow!

Two of my all time favorites are Einstuerzende Neubauten and Marlene Dietrich, so I was listening to both clips, and realized I was listening to them at the same time. What a great mix. :) I used to run into EN in Berlin. Blixa lived outside of Madhouse, one of the clubs I went to. And I was standing next to FM Einheit one day at the airport while he was waiting for Blixa to get off the plane. I didn't know who they were, suspected they were in a grubby band, but figured it out when I was at their concert with Nick Cave the next night. :)

One of my boyfriends dressed up as a cat because my favorite song was "Love Cats". I also like "10:15 on a Saturday Night". http://youtube.com/watch?v=hWJlBwR2-2I

So here's some music, so I do not disrupt this link.
I can not find the actual music, but I love Graeme Revel
http://www.discogs.com/release/184365 "Necropolis, Amphibians And Reptiles" is amazing and beautiful!

Ich moechte ein Eisbaer sein, in kalten polar,
Da muess ich nicht mehr schreien, alles wird so klar. . .
I want to be a polar bear in the cold north,
Then I wouldn't need to cry, everything would be so clear, . . .

ixi "Der Knutschfleck" (The Hicky)

Mach mich doch kein Knutschfleck. . .
Don't give me a hicky, anything, but no hicky, the hicky has only one purpose, you will be gone and the hicky will still be here. :)

Nice additions - and mostly new to me. Great NE shots. The singer is quite like a staid looking Klaus Kinski.

Lots of Celtic stuff in there - good for a dram, as always.

And then the B-52s when Ricky was still alive! Fool's gold, but gold nonetheless.

Not so much obscure, as German. :) They have a hard time distributing their music outside Germany, especially if they sing in German. Goethes Erben for example wanted to sing in German. Mindy, btw, is from Osh Kosh, Wi. :)

I also listen to poppy music like, gasp, John Denver and Gordon Lightfoot, but that's my mom's fault. :)

If you go to your local Ren Fair, I bet Minstrels will be there. :)

Erasure:

"Always" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RCvT9xf_Yuo

"Piano Song" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G-BOX2qCl2k (this is a really really beautiful song, but it wasn't a single, so there isn't a proper vid).

"Drama!" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UAwiY4tOa9o

And a quirky one from 1987, "The Circus" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DsFAEfywiPQ (there is a horrible clown partway through this vid...)
