I am not sure Kuhlies would be comfy in a ten. May be too small a tank. I have my herd in a 29.

I put a sponge over the filter intake to prevent losing fish into the filter.

I have to say that the only time I have seen khulis in a 10 gallon, they didn't look comfy at all… quite the opposite really. I also found that when my ex-housemate kept some, they really appreciated being in a large group.

Sponge or stocking over the intake is a really good idea as any ammonia can harm the fry (and the loaches too).

Well, we all have different opinions on what is big enough and what is not. If it helps, I base mine on what I consider that the fish needs to be able to move around freely (so that the aquarium interferes as little as possible with this) and be kept in a group which is appropriate for the species (for kuhlis, I consider 6 to be an absolute minimum and 10 to be a realistic minimum because they have always been social when I have observed them).
4" adult kuhlis are fast little buggers and in a 10 gallon aquarium, I really can't see them being able to do much more than just go around in circles.
